Gorgeous Garden Beds – September Short Projects

Gorgeous Garden BedsWhat a beautiful spring day! This is what I have been working on in my front garden over the last few months (very slowly!) – transforming my garden beds from messy to fabulous! :)

Before: Check out those weeds! Lara is not impressed.

What I’ve been doing with each and every garden bed is pulling out all the weeds, and giving the soil a thorough turn over to make sure there are no lurking weed roots remaining.

After weeding – soil looks a lot nicer now!

Then I’ve been putting our huge amount of junk mail to use by laying it out over the soil – about 5 sheets seems to work well to stop weeds coming through (for a few months anyway). Some people use plastic, but I thought this was a bit more enviro-friendly.

I had to weigh down the paper with dirt to stop it blowing away!

Finally, I covered the whole lot with a generous serve of tan bark! It really transforms the look I think. Especially when you do it over the whole garden, which unfortunately takes quite a bit longer than this little part.

I’ve spent a small fortune at Bunnings buying enough tan bark for the whole garden, but I think it’s worth it. I love having a neat garden.

What do you think? How do you keep your garden looking great in spring?

Any time Debra! They really are relentless, aren’t they? I always find it frustrating that I constantly struggle to kill the weeds, but I can’t keep the good plants alive!

Glad you used paper and not plastic, plastic doesn’t stop weeds and is terrible for your garden. Looks beautiful! Another inspire DIY :)
